Happy May! Does anyone else remember May poles? What a simple time that was. Our school would dance around the pole winding fabric lengths and make a bow at the bottom. God I’m old!!! But it was fun!!!

Speaking of  fun, in April we started off a great month,  with BarnHouse Chicks market in Thousand Oaks. Wow, the vendors were great! Even vendors we know were talking about the other ones, saying they had wonderful merchandise and arranged their booths expertly. Met some we didn’t know and are now following to see where we can find them next. Make sure you follow the ones you like, that’s why I add the @ instagram tag.

As you can tell we are trying to find more of these special events and shops so if you know of any we haven’t mentioned please put in a comment here or on our Instagram, we’re mad about, where we now have over 3500 followers!!!! Pretty good for not having a store or selling anything!  The saddest thing happened last week, we went to a store we love and found out they are closing. The rent is going way way up and they decided to try other avenues. I hate to see that happen and the only way we can keep all these places in business is to give them our business. We are trying to get to more events from Ventura to San Diego. We want to see more of you! We are planning a trip to Paso Robles on May 6th for Three Speckled Hens, already got our hotel and tickets!! We also want to go to Arizona soon and on the bucket list is Round Top Texas, of course!!!

Stores we stopped at in April include the ones in  Crestline’s TopTown,@ The_Rusty_Bucket_, My Favorite Things, @Encompass, and Sara’s Antiques and Atelier, it is gorgeous in the mountains and a lovely days trip! We only went up that far but next trip plan on hitting Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear too. It really clears your head to go up there. I used to live in the mountains and I really miss it. Nothing like fresh cool air. Did I say it’s beautiful up there?

We hit Savoir Faire in Fullerton, which is always the first Sunday of each month. It is growing rapidly and is one of the markets that has vendors who only sell there.  We always get to see @Rusticandrefined_Vintage and Love_picking_junk there as well as @Piers2oranges, three of our favorites. It’s a place to see unusual pieces from some vendors who have been doing this a long time. And of course, we always make sure we get to@ Drivingmizdaisy,  2nd Sunday of each month. We are using the @ for Instagram on purpose so you can look them up easily. If you go to no other fleamarkets or stores we would recommend Driving Miz Daisy for the one you can get too. It has a great selection of booths, it is very well divided between furniture, handmade, food booths or trucks, jewelry and clothing. Some markets have an abundance of jewelry or all the same booths, Not here! Food trucks all over. It also has a booth with fresh fruit, we got yummy strawberries last time, and they really try to arrange the booths so you have a variety of things to browse. Plus they always have music, sometimes 2-3 small bands, which is fun to stop and refresh and listen to. It’s at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, lots of trees and green around. Did we mention real restrooms? Add all this together and it will be your favorite monthly adventure. You never know what you will find! We go every month.

We try to get to stores in-between flea markets because we are so firm in our belief that we need to keep all of them in business. We don’t buy much, our houses are full, and it’s impossible with all the great pieces we see, but we believe that we are doing our part by writing about them, and putting them on Instagram and Facebook. Let us know events you are selling at or going to.

One of the pictures is of @ Newagain_furnishings in Glendora. It’s fairly new so get over there and support them, at 1200 E Route 66, Glendora, Calif. Open Thurs-Sat. I am in love with just about everything in the store. I think Joann has a great eye for home decor.

February was a busy amazing month! Not only was Junk Bonanza taking place in Del Mar but, Junk in the Trunk was back! And I visited the Long Beach Flea market for the first time.

knows we do not get much rain. This year has been exceptional.) This market took place in Del Mar, an upscale area of San Diego county. The fairgrounds are large and diverse and always bring back great childhood memories of fairs and fireworks during the summer. It was held in one of the halls and there were so many new vendors. It was such a fun day meeting everyone and seeing all the great pieces. Paint n’ Paddles held a workshop, that dozens of people enjoyed. All the vendors we saw told us they had a very successful weekend.

The following day, I forced  my husband and sons to go to the Long Beach flea market. This market is an eclectic array of

vintage and re-purposed and unique finds. One booth had some of the springy animals from our childhood playgrounds. Another had Pokemon (vintage to my son-lol) and some beanie babies. (Alex and I found a few that  are coveted-scooped those up to resale).

This past weekend, hubby and I snuck up to the Pomona fairgrounds for the Junk in the Trunk market. SQQQUUUEEL  What a great market!!! I just love that it and the venue was awesome. Food trucks definitely are a hit! We got to see some of our favorite vendors, meet amazing new ones, and hubby finally bought the brown sugar mold he has been wanting. I don’t get out to the markets enough and when I do, I so love it. Visiting these markets and building We’re Mad About with my mom has been a true blessing and having the support of my husband and family has brought us all closer. We recently began a professional affiliation with Love Pop, you may have seen their advertisements on our site, we absolutely love their cards! They are intricate and adorable.

Hi-it’s Bonnie
After Christmas I made a trip to St George, Utah with my best friend of 53 years. Her grandson is in school there so we went to visit him, now for the third time. Of course, by now we have checked out most of the stores, antique and vintage, around there. Most were closed after the holidays and on Sunday. I posted a few pictures on Instagram, some of the pieces we saw were so good, I got a lot of ideas. It’s a beautiful area and everyone is very friendly. However we decided that neither of us could live there. Any guesses why? It’s not Mormons ( no problem there), it’s not the lack of bars (except in restaurants) I’m not that much of a drinker, it’s not the weather ( but I love So Cal)-it’s that there are no swap meets or flea markets around. What!!!!
It’s like taking a bottle away from a baby. I think I have withdrawal pains. I can’t wait for Sunday to go to Driving Miz Daisy and reassure myself it’s still going on. What the heck? How boring is life without our Sunday outings?? And Saturday and Wed-Friday at the stores? For me, going out, meeting vendors, seeing friends, checking out displays and new merchandise, getting some sunshine (I hope), getting a little exercise, it’s the best.
Next week we will head out to some stores and check out their winter displays. Get ready store owners!! I cannot believe how inventive and talented these vendors are. I could live in several of the stores front windows, they look so cozy and well-arranged!
I don’t know about you guys but Amy and I are filling our calendars for the first part of the year. Feb. looks so exciting with Junk in the Trunk coming to Pomona, and Junk Bonanza at Del Mar-I can’t wait to see some of the vendors we met last time and meet some new ones. These are the cream of the crop-make your plans to go too.

2017 is going to be a great year. Amy and I started in April 2016, now we have over 2,100 followers

on Instagram and have made many many new friends, so it has been very fulfilling for us.

Department 56 and I have a love/hate relationship. One of my sisters bought my other sister, Robin, and I each a 3 piece starter set in 1987. Of course we fell in love with it so since then we have bought a piece for each other almost every birthday and Christmas. They started making these villages in 1976 and Dicken’s Village in 1984. We both collect Dicken’s but Robin also collects the Halloween series. ( See, I can control myself a little.)

So like any collection, it is a little out of control. Not to say that we have all of them-because we don’t-they come out with several new ones each year. But we both have about 60-100 houses, businesses, and vendors-selling mistletoe and hot drinks and such. Sometimes we buy each other the same one without knowing.

Gardens in Escondido, some at Stats in Pasadena and Whittier, some in Napa when I lived there, and some at a store we loved called Windsor Cottage in Rancho Cucamonga which is now out of business. Windsor Cottage put on a tour each year at Christmas where you could go to 4-6 different collectors houses and see their villages displayed. It was so much fun. Almost like trick or treating! First you would meet at the store, get refreshments, look at the new pieces, then they would hand out a map showing the houses on the tour. It was wonderful because one-the collectors who did all the work, could see it was appreciated and two-because we got to see the private setups. You would not believe the beautiful incredible ways they arranged these villages. Trains ran through them, snow fell into the scenes, skaters moved around ice rinks. Every house had refreshments, some were decorated from top to bottom, and it was a great night always. We did the tour for several years, and sometimes there was a Halloween one too. I have searched for other tours and never found any-if you know of one please comment. I now have a group of 10 people searching for one. Or maybe next year, we could start our own.

So after last Christmas when I barely decorated (had a bad knee), I decided this year I would put out the villages-no, some of the villages. We went to Junk in the Trunk in San Diego and I bought a ladder. Anyone on Pinterest has seen these ladders with Christmas villages, can’t say I was original. Then I conned my son into buying and cutting wood to stretch across the steps for my birthday present. I am beginning to like projects rather than presents. We got it in the house and it was up to me, no one else left to blame!
I have a shed full of holiday decorations so first I had to hire a friend to help me get to the villages. That was 3 hours of packing away stuff I had thrown in the doorway all year and 2 1/2 hours of me cussing and dragging trash away. My organizing fairy took the year off. After we unearthed the villages I started bringing them in the house. It takes awhile to unpack because they are in styrofoam boxes and break easily. But I did it! Then I arranged them by shelf-businesses on one, houses on the next, and I planned to put a church on the top. Best laid plans-it was a little too wobbly, making me have nightmares of it falling on my 92 year old mothers head during Christmas dinner. I ended up buying a gorgeous lightweight angel at Driving Miz Daisy ( $6.00!!) and placed it on top. I put batting on the boards and a border of fake snow and we were ready to go. 6 hours later and the top picture is the result.

I love the way it looks and I love the villages. The houses all have names ,like Blueberry Cottage and Hollyberry Cottage, I have 2 post offices, since I worked for them and two English mailboxes, even 2 different churches and several pubs-do you think there’s a reason for them??? Hmmm. It may not be decorator heaven but it works, and I did it!!!

I had a little get together to show them off and they were a hit. Now to get through 16 people at Christmas Eve without any breakage and then I get to repack, re-cuss and back they go-to my nice clean storage. Since I have so many I thought I would mark the boxes with the year and next year use the ones I couldn’t fit this time. That way I can see them all without killing myself to overdo it. Those days are gone.

I hope you enjoyed my story and looking at the villages. I plan to leave them to my granddaughters and hope this tradition goes on… They are beautiiful and charming and I have gotten so much happiness from them, I hope they will too.

The Vintage Marketplace is one of our favorite markets. The market always has the best vendors and sweet finds. They started out at Rainbow Oaks Park in the Rainbow area. For the last year, I’ve been fortunate enough to have it close to home in Temecula. The Temecula location is in ranch country, surrounded by mountains and horse properties. Simply beautiful. Well now they are headed “Back to their roots”! We are very excited for the market to be headed home.

This past Summer, we met Tani and Tom at The Vintage Marketplace at Galway Downs. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to chat with them as much as we would have liked, because they were so busy, fortunately for them. After stumbling upon their shop in Fallbrook and spending some time exploring, we understand why. Tani was so warm and welcoming. I wanted to spend hours in her shop chatting with her and learning more about what drives her style. She is a remarkable woman and once you see all they have to offer, you will want to get to know her too.

Recently, Bucket of Nails moved to a brand new location in Fallbrook and we thought that was the best time to interview them for a feature. Normally we do a re-write of the Q& A, but Tani answered our questions so perfectly, we decided not to change a thing. Please enjoy our Q&A session with Bucket of Nails…

Q.What kind of business do you have? Is it sole owner or partners?

A. We have a home decor store specializing in custom built farm tables. It is a family owned business.  My husband builds the tables, I design and do the finishing work and our children work in the store and deliver for us.

Q. Why did you start your business?

A. The business took on its own life. We started painting furniture on the side at Long Beach Flea Market and Irvine Flea Market.  We eventually moved into rental spaces in vintage malls. We loved what we were doing so much when the opportunity for a store front opened it seemed like the next step.

Q. How did you come up with the name?

A. My husband came up with the name- a spin off of Bucket of Bolts, we always laugh because we have no nails in our tables….

Q. Do you sell anywhere else besides the store?

A. We are only selling through the store at this time.  Our tables do get delivered all over Southern California, and a few out of state.

Q. What are your hopes and long term goals?

A. We just completed one of my dreams, to have our build shop connected with our store. We just added a design room, kids playroom, apothecary bar and we just opened last week- So I feel I am in the middle of a dream!!

Next step would be for our sons’ to open a store in Austin TX or Orange County.

Q. What is your favorite piece and why?

A. Our tables are my babies, so they are my favorite.  Love goes into each one, can’t explain it.

Q. Did the business come from a passion or did you see a need?

A. Our business came from a passion and a need, We have 5 children and a farm table from the late 1800’s. We eat, play games, visit around our table.  Everyone should be able to afford a quality farmhouse table.  That was what we set out to do.

Q. Did you already work in this medium or was there a large learning curve?

A. Not a large learning curve, I believe when it is a passion the learning curve is better phrased as growing pains (we had a few of those).

Q. What has been your biggest challenge?

A. Finding personal time.  We love what we do and when you are growing a business it can be full time plus.  You need time to step away and rest. That is our biggest challenge.

Recently, we signed up to a blog collaboration with Krista from Vintage & Restore. She sells a fabulous line of furniture paint. I wanted to share about her paint with our loyal readers.

I received a gorgeous dark grey paint, Charcoal and clear and brown waxes. I was quite excited to use the paint and set about trying to find the perfect small piece to re-do. I admit, it took me longer than I wanted to complete the piece and write this blog. Family first.

At last I hit upon the perfect piece and quickly approached my husband with fluttering eyelashes to ask permission to paint a small table of his. It was the perfect size and desperately needed to be re-done from the 1990’s brown to a more updated chic look.

This paint was incredibly easy to work with and has great coverage. The 4oz jar provided more than enough paint to complete the task with a bit left over. It went on smoothly and required no prepping other than a cleaning of the furniture piece.

November Southern California weather. Not complaining, but ready for some cooling. After the paint had thoroughly dried, I roughed up a few places to allow the wood to show through. I was looking for a nice vintage feel. I then took the brown wax and applied a light coat, being careful to work it in. Yes, I put brown wax over grey paint…and I LOVE it. I was able to achieve the nice dark rich dark grey look I had been hoping for. It came out beautifully. I am so happy with the piece and the spousal unit was quite pleased too.

Krista has developed a pleasing line of furniture paint. Her company is based out of Colorado and her passion began in the same way it did for so many of us. She was looking for a way to update her furniture and create some side income. Her paints are a great bargain and come in fabulous colors. Ocean Mist will be part of my next order, a gorgeous blue green that reminds me of the Dominican Republic ocean.

Emporia on Route 66

We are adding to our blog by interviewing some of the shop owners of the places we go regularly and love. We have listened to all of you and realize that you want to know more about how they got started, the basics of their business. We all dream of opening cute little stores but it takes a lot of grit and determination, not to mention dollars. So hopefully this will be interesting to you and informative, we’ve learned so much.

Our first interview was with Emporia. They are located at 719 E. Route 66 Glendora, Calif. Phone 909-263-5404. Instagram and Facebook are under emporiaonroute66. We first saw an advertisement for them and dropped in about 3 months ago. We’ve been back twice since. What a fascinating place. It is owned and run by Greg and Theresa who also own Shamrock Salvage Design and by Kim and Michelle who own American Vintage Fare. They teamed together to make Emporia. The great thing about the four of them is that they all have skills to offer and combined make up a talented foursome. It’s great to have others to bounce your ideas off. They also had a head start by owning businesses but it is still a learning curve to have a storefront.

One of the things we liked about this shop is that it is constantly changing. The pieces they have are either handmade, repainted, homegrown, vintage and all unique. They believe, as we do, in preserving the past and protecting our future. In their words “our store is a place that helps the environment by preventing further butchering of our forests and prevents items from ending up in landfills.” We are often amazed at the items we see re-purposed that a few years ago would have been tossed. That’s one of the best things about the current reuse/re-purpose/repaint/remake/relove movement. We hope it goes on forever. Once these precious pieces are gone there’s no history or stories left for our children. American- made is a theme they take to heart. Craftsmanship is a key word also, many of the pieces in the store display wonderful talent and skills.

The store is a easy relaxing place to browse. It is set up in vignettes, which helps a customer to picture the item in their home. Whenever we go in we have to look around 2-3 times so we don’t miss anything new. Often we get home and look at the pictures and see pieces we didn’t really notice in the store, because there is so much to see and like. What we like is if a piece of furniture doesn’t sell right away (which most of them do), it is re-positioned and styled, so nothing is ever the same or stagnant.

One of our questions is always “which one is your favorite piece?” Theresa named one that we noticed right away (shown). It’s their American Flag table. She said it was over 100 years old, made of reclaimed wood. All 4 of the owners are super proud to be Americans and their picks show it. We feel the same, being a military mother and grandmother.

One of Emporia’s missions is to help other craftsmen and artists. They want to open additional locations and are always looking for vendors who feel the same as they do about our country and their crafts. As Theresa stated “small business helping small business”.  So if you are looking to place your work give them a call. Friendly and warm are how we would describe them. Often one of our pet peeves is that shop keepers do not acknowledge their potential customers. No fear of that here. A quick hello is often all it takes to make you feel at ease in a store. That interaction is essential to a business and Emporia does it well.

They are open Thurs-Sun. Hours are Th, Fri, Sat 11 am-6 pm, Sun 11 am-3 pm. When we were in the store we were remarking on how many places we go now that also keep that kind of schedule. It gives the owners time to work on projects, go pickin’, and rearrange the store. We like it because we can fit our schedule to meet more owners and see more shops in the same day.

We often get asked about making money from what we do. Nope, we don’t. Bonnie is retired but Amy still works 32 hours a week so she can’t get out as often and does our behind the scenes work. We do have ads on our blog, and we would love it if you click on them when you visit, this will help us to make some revenue to assist with travel expenses.  We both hope to meet a lot more vendors and shop owners in the near future and interview them. Our instagram hit 1500!!!!! this week and we can’t say thank you enough. The knowledge that you like what we bring to the table is wonderful.
